Some fossil remains from the Rancholabrean period (300,000 to 11,000 years BP) have been found in Georgia and Tennessee, areas farther south than the turtles' current range.

Stout-legged Wren

Radiocarbon dates for the assemblages with which it is associated range from 25,000 BP to 1,000 BP.


European Ice Age leopard

These leopards, attributed to the subspecies P. p. begoueni, were replaced about 600.000 years Before Present by P. p. sickenbergi,which lived until the middle Pleistocene in Europe.

At the Topper archaeological site (located along the banks of the Savannah River near Allendale, South Carolina) investigated by University of South Carolina archaeologist Dr. Albert Goodyear, charcoal material recovered in association with purported human artifacts returned radiocarbon dates of up to 50,000 years before the present (BP).

Roughly 8,000 years BP, the Laurentide Ice Sheet thinned and split into two lobes, one centered over Quebec-Labrador, the other over Keewatin.
