2 unusual facts about Beka Lamb

Beka Lamb

Beka's father (Bill Lamb) cuts down Beka's favorite tree (a bougainvillea) as a sign that the wild ways Beka had picked up must stop at once when she finally tells him that she has failed her exam.

It won the Fawcett Society Book Prize in 1983 and was one of the first novels from Belize to gain international recognition.

Land of the Free

In author Zee Edgell's Beka Lamb, the title character and her friend Toycie Qualo sing the full version of the original song, Land of the Gods (of which the two opening and closing lines are mentioned in the story), while parodying the political meetings then being held by the PIP, a reference to the PUP, in Belize City.
