In the summer of 2005, Paramount Pictures optioned film rights to the book and hired Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (both members of the State comedy troupe and co-creators of the Reno 911! television series) to write a script based on the book.
Leggero shot an unaired pilot called, The Strip, for NBC, with Tom Lennon and Ben Garant from Reno 911! She was a judge, alongside Andy Kindler and Greg Giraldo, on the 2010 season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, hosted by Craig Robinson.
According to writers Tom Lennon and Robert Ben Garant's appearance on the Nerdist Podcast from Aug 23, 2011, changes included a happier ending, the removal of a sparse drums-only score recorded by Meg White of the rock band The White Stripes, and other alterations that made a significant change to the overall tone of the film.
