He first trained as a painter in his father's studio, then went to Rome to study under Benedetto Luti (1666–1724), becoming principally a portrait artist.
He was patronized by the prince of Carignan, who sent him to Rome, where he studied under Benedetto Luti.
He twice (first time between 1712–1719, second time around 1721–1728) visited Rome and studied with the Roman painters Benedetto Luti and Francesco Trevisani.
