His brother is Benjamin L. Liebman, a professor of Chinese law at Columbia Law School.
They have two sons, Benjamin L. Liebman, the Robert L. Lieff Professor of Law and the director of the Center for Chinese Legal Studies, and Jeffrey B. Liebman who is a professor of public policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and currently served as an economic advisor to Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Contrary to popular belief, despite WBLK's format and target audience, its call letters do not stand for the word "BLacK" per se; rather, they are a tribute to Benjamin L. Kulick, who was a major financial backer of the station when it first went on the air.
