In 1965 he won a Harkness International Fellowship and traveled to the United States for graduate work at Brandeis University, Harvard University and with Leonard Shure and Ernst Oster in New York.
In his hometown he had performances with orchestras like Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood estate and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra which was guided by Benjamin Zander.
The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra formerly headed by Benjamin Zander is arguably the most selective group at the school.
He has been called a "wonderfully engaging conductor" by Boston Philharmonic's Benjamin Zander.
He married Gretl Magnus in Berlin in 1931, and they had three sons and a daughter, among them legal scholar Michael Zander and conductor Benjamin Zander.
