In pre-historic days the plateau region of the district has been the abode of the aboriginals whose chief representatives now are the Bhars, the Cheros and the Savers.
The diocese covers an area of 11,311 km² of the Patna state, comprising the districts Buxar, Bhojpur, Bhabua, and Rohtas.
