4 unusual facts about Bill Lear

Bill Lear

Lear entered Englewood High School but was dismissed for showing up teachers.

Fidelipac

Unlike the later consumer-marketed 8-track cartridge developed later in 1964 by Bill Lear which had the pinch roller integrated in the cartridge, the Fidelipac cartridge had a hole in the right-hand bottom front corner of the cartridge, where the pinch roller, built into the player instead, would swing up into place to support the tape up against the capstan.

Friendship One

A total of 141 passengers were on board, including Neil Armstrong and Bill Lear's widow, Moya.

Sound recording and reproduction

The multitrack audio cartridge had been in wide use in the radio industry, from the late 1950s to the 1980s, but in the 1960s the pre-recorded 8-track cartridge was launched as a consumer audio format by Bill Lear of the Lear Jet aircraft company (and although its correct name was the 'Lear Jet Cartridge', it was seldom referred to as such).
