After Hugh Watt had been acting Prime Minister for the first few days of September 1974, Kirk was succeeded by Bill Rowling on 6 September.

40th New Zealand Parliament

The Labour Party, led by former Prime Minister Bill Rowling, had made significant gains (actually winning the largest portion of the popular vote), but remained in opposition.

Bill Rowling

After completing his education, Rowling taught at several schools around the country, including at Motueka, Christchurch, Waverley and in Northland.

He spent a short amount of time serving abroad in Malaysia and Singapore, a deployment connected with the "Malayan Emergency".
