A Democrat, Tilghman had been a delegate to his party's 1904 convention, which met in St. Louis, Missouri, to nominate New York Judge Alton B. Parker, a former law partner of U.S. President Grover Cleveland, to run against the successful Republican incumbent, Theodore Roosevelt.

On Halloween night, 1924, Cromwell Town Marshal and legendary Old West lawman Bill Tilghman was shot outside of a cafe called "Ma Murphy's", by a corrupt prohibition agent named Wiley Lynn.
Although by reputation he captured many outlaws of the day, he is less known than others serving during the same time period, such as Bill Tilghman, Heck Thomas, or Chris Madsen.
The gang originated in Oklahoma, following the downfall of the Wild Bunch at the hands of three Deputy US Marshals, Heck Thomas, Bill Tilghman, and Chris Madsen.
