Birgunj (also Birganj) (Nepali: बिरगंज) is a sub-metropolitan municipality and border town in Parsa District in the Narayani Zone of southern Nepal.

In addition to Nepali, several other languages are spoken in the town including Bhojpuri, Hindi, Maithili, Nepal Bhasa, Marwari and English.
Ramesh Parsad Kharel has served as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Pokhara, Kathmandu, and Birgunj.

Once moving to Birgunj in Parsa District, he has continued the strong policing he was known for in Kathmandu.

It is an hour drive from the Nepalese border city of Birgunj, which is adjacent to its Indian counterpart, Raxaul.
The city was originally established by late Shri Ghadsi Ram Sarawagi, who hailed from Birgunj in Parsa District and named it Mahendranagar in the honor of late king Mahendra of Nepal.
In 1966, he moved to Birgunj, Nepal with his friends, which included Anuradha Koirala (then Anuradha Gurung), managing an English-medium private school.
It has the headquartar outside of Kathmandu Valley, in Birgunj, which falls in Terai region of Nepal.
