Church of Ceylon

The Church of Ceylon, which is the Anglican Church in Sri Lanka, was established with the appointment of its first Bishop, Rt Rev James Chapman in 1845 as the Bishop of Colombo.

His first posting abroad came in 1931 when he was appointed Chaplain to Bishop of Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), a position he held until 1938.

Among the previous incumbent priests have been Rev. Thomas Helmore (1873-1874), a noted authority on plainsong and English choral music; and Rev. Cecil Horsley, who was vicar from 1934 until 1938, when he was appointed Bishop of Colombo in the Church of Ceylon, later becoming Bishop of Gibraltar.
