The M61 motorway, part of the national motorway network between the M60/M62 (Manchester orbital motorway) and the M6 (Preston) was opened on 28 November 1969 by Fred Mulley, Minister of Transport.

Blackrod was once the junction for a short branch to serve the original Horwich station (closed to passengers in 1965) and Horwich Locomotive Works (sold in 1988, after which the line was closed and lifted).
"Wallsuches Bleach Works" brought employment to Horwich and workers came from Horwich, Blackrod, Adlington and Rivington.
