At one point, Dragon Man had been placed in the Negative Zone, and like most of the other prisoners, was conscripted into service when Blastaar attacked the prison.

When the Shadow Initiative was sent in to liberate the prison, Blastaar sent Dragon Man against them.
It is revealed in the Guardians of the Galaxy series that Nagan is one of the inmates left behind in the Negative Zone's Prison 42 and was used to help Star-Lord communicate with Mantis telepathically to bring the other Guardians to help defend the 42 prison against Blastaar and his horde from invading Earth via the non-functional portal there.
During his time with the Guardians of the Galaxy Groot took part in all of the team's missions, taking on threats like the Badoon, Blastaar, the Negative Zone forces, The Shi'Ar, The Magus and The Cancerverse.
Although an alien pirate mysteriously died in H.E.R.B.I.E.'s presence, and the villain Blastaar suddenly escaped from the Negative Zone, nobody suspects that H.E.R.B.I.E. was responsible.
