In 1927 and 1928, Bluefield State was voted the Black college football national champion by the Pittsburgh Courier.

Some historically black colleges now have non-black majorities, notably West Virginia State University and Bluefield State College whose student body has been over 80% white since the mid-1960s.
He was also a member of the Bluefield State College jazz ensemble under the direction of Don Caruth while still attending Bluefield High School.
