It is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and normally lives inside the body cavity of a sea cucumber such as the pineapple sea cucumber (Thelenota ananas) or the leopard sea cucumber (Bohadschia argus).
During the experimental work, a large sea cucumber, Bohadschia argus, was put in a bucket of relatively cold water which caused 14 Carapus mourlani to emerge, with a further one remaining inside.
