In November 1915, Penrose accompanied the Liberty Bell on its nationwide tour returning to Pennsylvania from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco; Penrose accompanied the bell to New Orleans and then to Philadelphia.

Penrose was named for Republican Senator Boies Penrose (November 1, 1860–December 31, 1921) who climbed it in the 1920s while hunting with famed local big-game outfitter W.G. (Bill) Manson.

Mount Penrose

It was named for Senator Boies Penrose, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who was the first to climb it, during a hunting expedition led by famed guide W.G. "Bill" Manson.
