It occurs in patches of the Black River Gorges National Park and on some off-shore islands of Mauritius including Ilot Vacoas, Round Island, Serpent Island, Ilot Gabriel, Pigeon Rock, Flat Island, Gunner’s Quoin, Ile aux Aigrettes, and Ile de la Passe.

The dominant predators on the island are reptiles; particularly pythons (brown and green), monitor lizards and the Major's skink.
In 1923, Bojer journeyed to Litchville, North Dakota, to research the lives of the Norwegian immigrants who had settled there.
One important project is the translocation of the critically endangered Whitaker's Skink from the only remaining mainland population at nearby Pukerua Bay.
The Department of Conservation and the Friends of Mana Island are running a five year project to catch and breed enough animals from the vulnerable Pukerua Bay colony to establish a sustainable population on nearby predator-free Mana Island.

There is also a mainland population in a small rocky area at the base of coastal hills at Pukerua Bay, near Wellington.
A sheep and cattle farming area, there is still much wildlife including wombats, greater gliders, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Echidna, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, wallabies, Red-bellied Black Snakes, Tiger Snake, Cunningham's Skink and native fish in the Wyanbene Creek and nearby Shoalhaven and Duea rivers.
