Formerly, in the period of the rule of the first monarchs of Piast State, like also before Baptism of Poland in 966, in the 10th century Płock as the capital castle were one of monarchal seats, among others of prince Mieszko I and of king Bolesław I Chrobry, which on the Płock Tumskie Hill over the Vistula River raised one's palatium.

He was the eldest son of Bolesław I the Brave, King of Poland, but was deprived of the succession by his father, who around 1001 sent him to Italy, in order to became a monk at one of Saint Romuald's hermitages in Ravenna.
He left three sons: Eckard I, who succeededed Rikdag as Margrave of Meissen in 985; Gunzelin of Kuckenburg, who followed his brother in 1002, and Bruno, who defended Meissen against the troops of duke Bolesław I Chrobry of Poland in 1009.
After taking the marches of Lusatia and Sorbian Meissen, and the cities of Budziszyn and Meissen in 1002, Bolesław I Chrobry refused to pay tribute to the Empire from the conquered territories.
