Together, the pair set about rebuilding the Bees from the bottom up, bringing back former Bees, Martin Máša, Matt Foord, Shaun Thompson, Carl Graham, Tom Annetts and Brad Watchorn, and adding some players used to competing at the top end of the table, including Guildford captain, Rob Lamey and Slough pair, Michael Bowman and Andy Munroe.

John Nike Leisuresport Bracknell (home of the Bracknell Bees ice hockey team and mentioned in the film Ali G Indahouse) opened in 1985 for dry ski sloping and in 1987 for ice skating.
Fellow countryman and current teammate Martin Máša has skated on six different teams with Smítal: 1996-99 Johnstown Chiefs; 1997-98 Saint John Flames; 2000-01 Greensboro Generals; 2003-04 Texas Wildcatters; 2004-05 Bracknell Bees; 2009–present Guildford Flames.
