The film which Otto watches, The Momentum of Things, parodies a film about the decline of coal mining in Northern England, Brassed Off, with similar music to that heard in the film.
Grimethorpe is known for its past as a mining village, its brass band, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and was used as the location for the film Brassed Off - a black comedy which tells the plight of the village and the effect on its band.
The 1996 film, Brassed Off featured a scene set and filmed on location at The Piece Hall.
Ciaran has also played numerous theatre roles including 'Dandini' in Cinderella, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Hawth Theatre, Gaveroche in Les Misérables, 'Lozzo' in Off The Streets Project, 'Scot' in Brassed Off and Vince in Two Princes, both the latter for Theatr Clwyd.
From 1990-98 he was Head of Film at Channel 4, during which time he commissioned over 100 feature films including Trainspotting, The Madness of King George, Secrets & Lies, Shallow Grave, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Brassed Off, and films by Ken Loach, Peter Greenaway, Tony Harrison and many others.
The colliery played a starring role in the moving bitter-sweet 1996 film comedy Brassed Off based on the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, filmed in 1995.
