2 unusual facts about Brier


Paul Gowsell

After juniors, Gowsell was very successful on the cash 'spiel circuit, but played in just one Brier.

When he was in his early 20s, Gowsell took his Alberta championship team to an 8-3 record at the 1980 Labatt Brier, and lost to Al Hackner's Northern Ontario team in the semi-final.


2013 Tim Hortons Brier

Brock Virtue of Saskatchewan and Andrew Bilesky of British Columbia made their first appearances at the Brier, while veterans James Grattan of New Brunswick, Eddie MacKenzie of Prince Edward Island, and Paul Flemming of Nova Scotia made repeat appearances at the Brier.

Arthur Jasmine

After keeping out of the limelight for several years Jasmine took on the pseudonym Samson De Brier (sometimes cited as Sampson de Brier), and opened up an artist's salon in Los Angeles, California, in the early 1940s, attracting the likes of Jack Parsons, Anton LaVey, Ray Bradbury, L. Ron Hubbard, Forrest J. Ackerman, and a teenaged Kenneth Anger.

Darrell McKee

Korte and McKee played in their first Brier together in 2000, after winning the provincial championship, along with team mates Roger Korte and Rory Golanowski.

Éric Sylvain

The team failed to qualify for the 2007 Brier- losing to Pierre Charette in the provincial final.

Eugene Hritzuk

At the 1988 Labatt Brier, he finished the Brier with an 8-3 record, and lost to Alberta's Pat Ryan in the final.

Jean-Michel Ménard

Ménard failed to qualify for the 2010 Brier, losing out in the semi-final of the 2010 Quebec Men's Provincial Curling Championship to Martin Ferland.

Joel Jordison

WIth this win, Jordison won the right to represent Saskatchewan at the Brier that same year, where they finished with a 3–8 win-loss record.

Rudy Ramcharan

Ramcharan joined the team in 1996, and became the first visible minority to win the Brier, being of West Indies descent.

Samuel Rothschild

He was also a prominent supporter of curling in the city, including stints as president of the Northern Ontario Curling Association and the Canadian Curling Association from 1957 to 1958, and securing the city's status as host city of the 1953 Brier.

The club is home to many of the top curling teams in the world, including Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin, Brier champion Kevin Koe, Randy Ferbey, Ted Appelman, Chris Schille, Cathy King, Heather Nedohin and Valerie Sweeting.
