In 2006 First TransPennine Express started to replace its Class 158 trains with newer Class 185 Pennine and Class 170 Turbostar trains.
From 2011 there is an hourly service, usually operated by a Class 156; however, Class 158 are occasionally sighted.
If the plan is successful either Class 320 or Class 318 would be used on Whifflet routes instead of current stock Class 156 and Class 158 (prior to the electrification).
