In 1640 Canne visited England, and the Broadmead congregation of baptists having been formed he was called upon to preach to them.
He was unsuccessful as minister to the Independent congregation at Broadmead, Bristol, who found his taste in clothes too loud and disapproved of the church music which was his passion.
They have produced over 60 plays and established several new performance venues including the Showboat pub (Horfield), the Hen and Chicken pub (Bedminster), Quakers Friars (Broadmead), the Tobacco Factory (Southville) and Paintworks (Arnos Vale).

In 1994 they lost the use of that venue, but found a new home in part of the grade I listed building Quakers Friars in Broadmead where in the succeeding three years they produced new and lost work by writers ranging from Peter Nichols (Blue Murder) to Dion Boucicault (How She Loves Him).
The building is a short walk from Castle Park and the River Avon, Broadmead Shopping Centre and the pubs and bars of Baldwin and Corn Streets, and is not far from the Centre.
