At the peak of the park is a small lawn offering views to the east, north, and west, including the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands.

It is bounded by Haight Street to the north, and by Buena Vista Avenue West and Buena Vista Avenue East.

The district generally encompasses the neighborhood surrounding Haight Street, bounded by Stanyan Street and Golden Gate Park on the west, Oak Street and the Golden Gate Park Panhandle on the north, Baker Street and Buena Vista Park to the east and Frederick Street and Ashbury Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods to the south.
Buena Vista Park, developed in 1911-1912, was designed by U. Morell, a noted landscape architect from Minneapolis.
