A Season 2 episode of the television series The X-Files, entitled "The Calusari", featured a group of Romanian elders (ethnicity and religion unspecified) attempting a folk exorcism on a Romanian-American boy.

The Romanian historian of religion Mircea Eliade believed that the term Căluşari originated with the Romanian word for horse, cal, from the Latin caballus.
His mentioning of the traditional Căluşari dance in his musical notations makes this among the first to have ever recorded the custom.
When another death in the family occurs, the grandmother of the remaining child requests the aid of some Romanian ritualists, named the Calusari, in order to cleanse the home of evil.
