He set the NFHS National High School record in the 400 meters of 45.25, while winning the 1993 CIF California State Meet defeating Michael Granville, the national 800 meter record holder in the process.
At the 2003 CIF California State Meet, she finished third in the 100 metres behind Allyson Felix and Shalonda Solomon as a junior, but did not make it back to the meet her senior year after she transferred to Long Beach Wilson High School.
He had been a successful student athlete at Delano High School, making the finals at the CIF California State Meet in both the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash each of his four years, winning the 100 once and the 220 twice.
At the CIF California State Meet in 1969 he finished third, behind future rival James McAlister, in 1970 he finished second behind future NFL star, Lynn Swann and in 1971, he won the meet in what would have clearly been a meet record, had it not been wind aided.
