After his retirement, General Karamat became a visiting professor of war studies at CISAC Stanford University, and research associate at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. He was also part of a U.N.-sponsored study on Afghanistan, and was chairman of the board of Governors of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.
