The town was founded in 1770 by Carlos Murphy, a grenadier at the service of King Charles III of Spain, although a first settlement existed here from the 17th century.
Also that year, the commercial agreement with Japan was signed, the law of trial and dismissal of magistrates; sanitary zones in Asunción, Villarica and Caacupé and was created the regulations for the Army.
A riot broke out in Caacupé, in December 1875, and was led by General Serrano, his former Interior Minister.
