The village is around 10 to 15 km north of the island capital of Vila do Maio and about 6 km south of Morrinho and it is linked with a road with the road that encircles the entire island.
In one of the last events of the monarchy of Portugal affecting Calheta, King Carlos I of Portugal and Queen Amélie of Orléans visited the village of Calheta, travelling to Rabaçal, during their trip to Madeira.
The city is still (colloquially) known by its old name, Porto Inglês (Portuguese for "English port" in which was founded, Cape Verdean Creole: Port’ Inglês), in opposition of the older Porto Português (present day Calheta).

Located 15 kilometres from the municipal seat of Velas, on the municipalities southern border with (Calheta); it is delimited by the São Jorge Channel (on the southern coast), the civil parish of Urzelina (along the Ribeira Large) and the ridge of Pico da Esperança (in the civil parish of Norte Grande.
This settlement was originally formed by peoples from the village of Calheta, around 1690; this is conjecture, based on the construction of the village chapel, which was built to evoke São Lázaro.
