In 1705 the owner, John Walkinshaw, began to feu the lands of Blackfaulds (part of the Barrowfield estate) on which the old village of Calton was built, and in 1817 a charter was granted, erecting Calton into a Burgh.
He was born in 1908, one of six children born to Ned Maley, a native of County Mayo and Anne Sherlock from Glasgow, and raised in Stevenson Street in the Calton district of Glasgow.

Politically, he was considered an active Liberal Democrat campaigner for his personal friend Patsy Calton, the previous MP for Cheadle who was succeeded by Mark Hunter upon Calton's death from breast cancer.
The Calton Weavers massacre of 1787 is commemorated in a panel by Scottish artist Ken Currie in the People's Palace, Glasgow, commissioned on the 200th anniversary of the event.
By 1605 Edward Alleyn was a wealthy man and for £5,000 (a large amount in those days), was able to buy the Manor of Dulwich from the Calton family, who had owned it since the dissolution of the monasteries.

Matthew McGinn was born in Ross Street at the corner of the Gallowgate in Calton, Glasgow in 1928.
