Riviere learned to play tennis in his hometown of Aiken, South Carolina under Mark Devine at the Aiken Tennis Club.
In May 2008 he again successfully defended his title, and thus broke Etchebaster's record, against US pro Camden Riviere on the historic court at Fontainebleau Palace, France, winning 7 sets to 5 (6/1 3/6 5/6 6/4, 6/2 6/3 5/6 6/0, 6/1 2/6 1/6 6/5).
He lost narrowly to Camden Riviere in the final eliminator, and got revenge soon after in the US open.If Steve wins the British open it takes him to Number 1.
