Current membership mainly consists of former members of airborne regiments, such as the Canadian Airborne Regiment and The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada.

Canadian Airborne Regiment

The Airborne deployed twice at home in the 1970s: once in response to the October Crisis in Quebec in 1970, then in 1976 to provide counter-terrorism support during the Montreal Olympics.

Despite being controversially cut short by the government at the time led by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and Minister of National Defence David Collenette, the Somalia Inquiry found deep problems in the leadership of the Canadian Forces.

The first deployment of FSSF to the Aleutian island of Kiska disappointed the troops when it was found that the Japanese forces expected there had already evacuated, but the exercise was considered good experience.


Marc Caron

As a junior officer he served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Airborne Commando in Cyprus from April 1974, with the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment in Lahr, Germany from August 1976 and with the Royal Welch Fusiliers in Lemgo, Germany from January 1978.
