Canley became part of Coventry as a result of successive encroachment of the latter's boundaries between 1928 and 1932, having historically been part of the Stoneleigh parish.
The platform for the car was largely based upon the chassis, engine, and running gear of the Triumph Herald saloon, and was manufactured at the Standard-Triumph works at Canley, in Coventry.

When Sir Henry Parkes settled there in the mid-19th century, he named his home Canley Grange, after his birthplace Canley Moat House in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, England.
In 1982 Axe moved to British Leyland (BL) where he took over as styling director from David Bache (who had been fired from BL owing to disagreements with then company boss Harold Musgrove over the still under development Austin Maestro), and was responsible for the building of a new styling studio at their Canley, Coventry plant; the former opened in 1982.
