Canovium was built at an ancient river crossing and was an important post on the Roman road and ancient drovers road via Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen to Abergwyngregyn and the Menai Strait.
No Roman town is known to have existed in the territory of this tribe, though the auxiliary fort of Canovium (Caerhun) was probably in their lands and may have had a civilian settlement around it.
While at Aberystwyth University, he also directed the excavations of Kanovium, the Roman fort at Caerhun, North Wales, in the 1920s, over a period of four summers.
