In May 2010, archaeologists announced the discovery of Cao Xiu's tomb in Mengjin County, Luoyang, Henan Province.

Cao Xiu led a force towards Xunyang (尋陽, present day Huangmei, Hubei).
In 228, being lured by a fake surrender of Eastern Wu general Zhou Fang (Three Kingdoms), Cao Xiu planned to attack Eastern Wu and advanced deeply into the front line Huancheng (皖城).
He accompanied the Wu generals Lü Fan, He Qi and others to resist the Wei forces commanded by Cao Xiu.

His successor Cao Rui sent Cao Xiu to launch the last invasion of Wu during this campaign at Shiting.
However, before they left, Cao Xiu was advised not to trust Zhou Fang by one of his advisers, Jia Kui.
Instead of realizing that it was indeed a trap, Cao Rui enthusiastically approved Cao Xiu's plan, and this led to a major military disaster, but Cao Xiu's forces were saved by Jia Kui from total annihilation.
Though, Zhou Fang of Wu defeated Cao Xiu after falsely defecting; thus the Wei forces failed once again.
