The first application of a staged maturity model to IT was not by CMM/SEI, but rather by Richard L. Nolan, who, in 1973 published the stages of growth model for IT organizations.
It has been awarded the aerospace quality management standard AS9100 (6 January 2006) and SW-CMM Level 3 software certification (9 February 2006) and ISO 13485 for medical device design and development.

Capability Maturity Model was created at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, and is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of continuous process improvement resulting in a reduced SDLC, improved ability to meet the cost and schedule targets, building products of high quality.
