A 2007 Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) survey of 600 state residents found that 93% Massachusetts residents agree that the state should be "a national leader in using cleaner and renewable energy on a large scale by moving ahead with offshore wind power" and other clean energy initiatives.

Clean Power Now was formed in 2003 after an opposition group, The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound was formed against the Cape Wind project proposed in 2001.
