After losing the election in 2006, Billström stepped down and was replaced by Carin Jämtin.

Prior to her appointment in 2003, she worked as the Deputy Secretary General of the Olof Palme International Center.
On 10 March 2011, he was proposed by the election committee led by Berit Andnor to succeed Mona Sahlin as the chairman of the party, with Carin Jämtin as the party secretary.
