He joined the revolutionaries of the Ten Years' War in Cuba (1868–1878) and served briefly as a recruiter for the revolutionary forces and as an aid to Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the leader of the insurrection.
For his work on international law and the prevention of war crimes, Lemkin received a number of awards, including the Cuban Grand Cross of the Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes in 1950, the Stephen Wise Award of the American Jewish Congress in 1951, and the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1955.

It was put under voting in Guáimaro on 10 April 1869, by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, President of the Constituent Assembly, and approved by the Deputies: Salvador Cisneros Betancourt, Antonio Zambrana, Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz, Jesús Rodríguez, Antonio Alcalá, José Izaguirre, Honorato Castillo, Francisco Sánchez, Antonio Lorda, Miguel Betancourt Guerra, Arcadio García, Tranquilino Valdés, Miguel Gerónimo Gutiérrez, and Eduardo Machado.
One of the events, attended by Fidel Castro, was held at in Manzanillo, Cuba, where her grandfather, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, on October 10, 1868, had made a speech against Spain which started the Ten Years' War.
