Carsphairn and Scaur Hills

The birthplace of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the inventor of the bicycle is just over a kilometre south of Penpont and between Penpont and Moniaive at Maxwelton House was the birthplace of Annie Laurie made famous in the song of that name and the subject of the 1927 movie also of that name.

The sculptor Andy Goldsworthy has lived in the village for many years and retains a workshop there.

This name was given to a series of earthworks that were thought to mark a frontier perhaps between Strathclyde Britons and the Angles in Galloway and running from Loch Ryan to near Annan on the Solway and perhaps even from coast to coast in association with the Catrail in Roxburghshire.
