It was later renamed after Charles Rooking Carter who was in charge of the building of the Black Bridge over the Waiohine River south of the town.

On 7 January 2012, a hot air balloon crashed just north of the town, killing eleven people and making headlines around the world.

Stonehenge Aotearoa, was built by members of The Phoenix Astronomy Society and is located near Carterton, New Zealand is a modern adaptation of the Stonehenge ruins on the Salisbury Plain of England.
