St. Laurence O'Toole, (1128 - 1180) or Lorcán Ua Tuathail, was born at Castledermot, County Kildare
The population of the town was 887 at the time of the (January 2006) census, a 22% increase over the figure recorded in 2002.
Over the centuries, the Irish parliament met in a number of locations both inside and outside Dublin - the first place of definitive date and place was Castledermot, County Kildare on 18 June 1264 some months earlier than the first English Parliament containing elected members.
During his career Smyth worked in senior positions in several well-known restaurants, amongst other in Roscoff Restaurant (Belfast), Antica Roma Restaurant (Belfast) and Kilkea Castle Hotel (Castledermot, County Kildare).
