In a statement, reported in the Sun on January 8, the then Bishop Marcus Fernando, Bishop of Chillaw and the president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka, said that reports reaching the Catholic Bishops' Conference indicated that the shooting was an unprovoked Sri Lankan Army attack on the church and the incumbent.

As part of his work as the chairman of the Department of International Affairs in the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, Bishop Lang travelled to Lebanon at the request of the Maronite Catholic Church.
He also serves as Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, and is a member of its permanent council (to which all Filipino Roman Catholic bishops belong).
