In 2001, he was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through parliament.
After leaving the Council, he continued to be active in the community; on 1 January 2001 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for services to migrant welfare, and on 9 June 2003 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the Parliament of New South Wales and the Fairfield community.

He is a past Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council having served four terms and has been awarded the Defence Force Service Medal, Centenary Medal and Justice of the Peace.
