The south part of it has been gradually filled in for use by the South Bay rail yard and several highways (specifically the Central Artery and the Southeast Expressway).
Such projects include the Washington D.C. Metro System, Superconducting Super Collider, Channel Tunnel, and the Boston Central Artery.
Currently, the site is partly occupied by basketball courts, temporary highway ramps for the Central Artery, and the old Wang Building, the headquarters for the Big Dig.
The intent would be to remove traffic from the downtown stretch of Interstate 93, also known as the Central Artery.
