He acted between 1950s and 1980s and was considered as an Andhra Dilip Kumar.
He moved to Chennai, formerly Madras for employment in painting career and joined Ketha Cini Publicity studios in 1968 as a cini publicity designer in preparing sketches for film sets through his links from established hero Chalam cum relative, a film producers cum artists like Karri Apparao Babji and Karri Rangarao.

At the time of his father’s death, G.V. Chalam was only eight years old.He was brought up by his paternal uncle, Guduru Ramachandra Rao – a Gandhian and a pioneer social reformer who convened the first Adi Andhra Mahajana Sabha in 1917 for the emancipation of the so-called ‘untouchable’ castes, Malas and Madigas of Andhra Pradesh (now known as Dalits).
