In the early 1950s he contributed poems and designed covers for the literary magazines Listen and Stand and contributed translations to Chanticleer, a magazine edited by the poet Ewart Milne.
The Society has collaborated with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Chamber Symphony, Peter Schickele, pianist and scholar Robert Levin, Chanticleer, Dave Brubeck, and the King's Singers.
He has composed for Zeitgeist, the Kronos Quartet, Joffrey Ballet, the National Symphony Orchestra, and Chanticleer.
Several other works claim to be inspired by Chaucer's tale but, like Rostand's play and the 1990 cartoon feature film Rock-a-Doodle based on it, have little connection with the original Renart Cycle version beyond using the name Chanticleer, or variants of it.
He also arranged three compositions for the 2006 film Nacho Libre, which were performed by Chanticleer.
Conte has received commissions from Chanticleer, the Golden Gate Men's Chorus, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the Dayton Philharmonic, the Oakland-East Bay Symphony, and the Stockton Symphony.
Perhaps his best known work is the vocal solo of Loch Lomond, featured on the Chanticleer album Wondrous Love.
After leaving Chanticleer, Wilder took a position as Associate Director of the Capital Campaign for the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. He was awarded a fellowship at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Vilar Institute for Arts Management, where he managed the first American tour of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra.
