In 1853, Charles and William Archer were the first Europeans to discover the Fitzroy River, which they named in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy, Governor of the Colony of New South Wales.
It was named by the Surveyor-General of New South Wales in the 1850s after Charles Augustus FitzRoy, who served as the Governor of New South Wales from 1848 to 1855.
Fitzroy St is named for Charles Augustus FitzRoy, governor of the colony at the time that St Kilda was expanding from its original seaside setting.
