Tal won the Charles Bronfman Prize for young humanitarian leadership in 2006 and used the prize money to establish the Tal Fund, which supports grassroots Israeli environmental activism.
He and Charles Bronfman co-founded Taglit-Birthright Israel, which has to date sent over 220,000 young Jews aged 18–26 on a 10-day trip to Israel without charge.

Andrea Brett Morrison Bronfman (May 30, 1945 – January 23, 2006) was a philanthropist and wife of billionaire Charles Bronfman, who was once co-chairman of Seagram's Co.
More than half of the funding comes from philanthropists, among them Charles Bronfman, Edgar Bronfman, Sr., Daniel Och, Marlene Post, Lynn Schusterman, Sheldon Adelson, and Michael Steinhardt.
Prior to coming to UJA-Federation, he served as a senior consultant to the Wexner Foundation and the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Foundation.
